VA Kicks off Research on Teaching around the Clock: A Look into Teachers’ Working Time in Europe

23 April 2025 / Study

How is the working time of teachers and researchers organised across the EU? What are the implications of these models on workload, digitalisation, and job satisfaction? As education systems evolve, these questions are increasingly central to policy, practice, and the well-being of professionals in the sector.

We are proud to contribute to the ETUCE-led research project “Teaching Around the Clock”, which aims to explore and compare working time models for teachers and researchers in the EU-27 Member States. The study investigates how educators balance teaching and non-teaching responsibilities, the growing role of digital tools, and the impact these factors have on professional well-being and fair compensation.

Through literature review, surveys, interviews, and case studies, our research will provide critical insights into current practices and highlight opportunities for more equitable and transparent working arrangements. By strengthening evidence-based social dialogue, the project will empower education trade unions to better represent their members and advocate for sustainable, supportive working conditions.

This research is an essential step toward promoting fairness and resilience in the education sector—one that ensures teachers and researchers are not just working harder, but working smarter, with the recognition and balance they deserve.

The project is expected to be finished by September 2026.
